A husband proof meal:

Jake can't do anything in the kitchen. I always joke that he can't even make cereal right. But this isn't really a joke, its pretty serious and his milk-to-cereal ratio is completely off. So when it came to dinner the other night, I knew I wouldn't be home to prepare it, and he would, so it was time to get creative.

 Red Beans and Rice: man-proofed

Step one: your ingredients

Easy peasy. You need a green pepper, some red beans (kidney beans) an onion, 3 cloves of garlic, smoked sausage, s&p, old bay seasoning, cayenne pepper, beef stock (2 cups worth), and some rice.

Now you just chop all of your ingredients and put them in your crock pot sleeve. (This step is very important, as Jake once tried to assemble the ingredients in a crockpot without a sleeve...this did not go well.) Mix everything together in your sleeve, cover with plastic wrap, and store in fridge.

This next step is of equal importance. I use these super handy stock packets made by swanson, because they take up no pantry space, pack some SERIOUS flavor, and you can decide how rich you want your stock. So, I set out 2 stock packets, with a PRE-MEASURED pitcher of water (2  cups), so that my sweet sweet Jacob wasn't confused 1 bit when it came to how much liquid to pour into the crock pot.

(don't forget to remind your honey to PLUG IN the crock pot, or else you could come home to a not-so-cooked meal.)

VOILA! With these simple pre-steps I took to make sure my lovie dovie was set up for success, we had a fantastic dinner, and I even let him take all of the credit!

I forgot to mention...you will probably need to make the rice yourself...or else you will end up with a black-bottomed-burnt rice pan, and no one wants one of those. (that part is simple though, 1 cup rice, 2 cups liquid, lid on, simmer 20 minutes, NO PEEKING!)

How is your hubby in the kitchen? Better than you? Much much worse? Or does he need to take a remedial course in cooking 101. (ie...Jake)

p.s. I didn't take a picture of the aftermath...I was too hungry...so this it what you Rb&r should sort of resemble...

I hope you try out these simple steps for husband-kitchen-success!

  1. Hahaha, this was awesome. I love that you pre-measured the water. My husband and I have a standing disagreement about the correct cereal-to-milk ratio, and it turns out that he is the one who is wrong. Obviously.
