DIY Wood Pallet Wall (EXCITING NURSERY SNEAK PEAK!)

Happy hump day, friends!

EEEK! I couldn't be more excited to share with you a little snippet of our baby boy's nursery. Long before we even started trying to get pregnant, we knew this room would be the space our future little one would occupy, so we never really did much with it. It was a storage room sometimes, a craft room others. When we finally saw those 2 pink lines, I could not WAIT to know what this little one would be so we could get started on putting this room together.

I never really had a solid plan for a girl, but I always knew I wanted a woodsy, manly, modern space if we were to have a boy, so when the doctor confirmed baby was a "he" it was time for us to get to work! And by us, I mean my handsome baby daddy, cause if it weren't for him, Sawyer's room would still be a storage space. :)

Lets just hop right in, shall we? This is what you're going to need to get started:

Materials (follow links to see tools we use):
  • Pallet Wood or untreated planks- we used untreated white pine instead of pallet wood. It was a bit more pricey than if you were to collect pallet wood, however, we didn't want to worry about pesticides or chemicals in the wood that close to where our little guy would sleep. You could strip/clean pallet wood if you would prefer to go this route, that was just time we weren't willing to spend!
Tools:

It's really easy from here, albeit a bit time consuming. Jake went in and measured the wall we would be installing the wood on, and wrote down an estimate on wood we would need. We ended up with (10) 1x6 planks, (10) 1x3 planks, and 15 (1x4) planks and it was JUST enough.

There really wasn't a rhyme or reason for the stain we chose. Really, we just didn't want to spend any money on stains, so we used what we already had and borrowed some from my parents as well. We ended up with 4 different colors, Weathered Gray, Driftwood, Honey Oak, and Dark Walnut. We used Ebony (which is practically black) on some of the driftwood pieces to give it a more distressed look as well.

Unfortunately, (for Jake at least) the fumes from the stain are just not safe for this preggo lady, so he was stuck in the 105 degree garage staining boards while I enjoyed a Fixer Upper marathon in the air conditioned house. He stained all of the boards and we left them out overnight to cure before distressing them a bit.

Once the boards had cured, Jake went in with our electric sander and distressed all of the boards to give them a "worn" look, but also so the grain of the wood could shine through. This is where it started to get really fun!

When we brought the wood inside, we stacked it based on size, not color. I wish I could tell you that we had a plan of attack when it came to cutting the boards and matching the colors, but we really just eyeballed it.

Jake used our stud finder to mark the studs on the wall, and used blue painters tape rather than pencil so he could see them even once we started to get near the bottom.

When nailing your boards in, it's really important to nail them into the studs. The last thing you want is wood falling down on your new baby, so we took extra precaution and put in a nail in all the studs, and 2 in between!

The magic happens when you're really random with it. We just used the saw to slice up different pieces, so it really didn't look orderly at all. I'm obsessed with the final turnout!

Happy Dance! Happy Dance! As soon as it was finished (about 11 PM on a Sunday) I begged Jake to hang up his name so I could see the final result, and I almost cried tears of joy seeing it all come together!

This room still has a long way to go until it's complete, baby bedding is being delivered, his rocker should be here today (!!!!) and we still have a fun wall behind the camera to show you, but I have to say, even if we didn't do another darn thing in here, this wall really is a show stopper.

Even little Axl-Bear feels the same :) I may just be projecting human emotions on my first born child, but I think he is pretty excited to be a big brother, what do you think?!

We filmed ourselves putting this entire wall together, and Jake makes a guest appearance in the video below to help give you some useful tips for your own pallet wall, and there is a time lapse of us putting it up in the video below. I hope it's helpful to you!

If you have any questions at all, please comment them below, and i'll be glad to help. :) Thanks so much for watching, friends!

I'll have a THIRD TRIMESTER Vlog & footage from our 4D ultrasound for ya on Friday, make sure you come back!

Until Next Time,
xo Kylie
