DIY Oversized Pinboard

Happy Friday eve!

As promised last week when I shared my home desk here is the tutorial for the super quick little pinboard we threw together as a large piece over the desk.  I don't know if it's just me, but I could slap a gallery wall on anything. It's the simplest, most fun way to cover a large space cost effectively! I have a gallery wall opposite the desk so I knew I didn't want to put two in the same room, but we still needed to fill the large space between the my faux built in bookcases.

Enter: giant pink pinboard. :) I did say this was going to be my super pink super girly space in the house after all!

You will need:

  • A piece of MDF from the hardware store (mine is 2x4)
  • 6 pack of cork tiles from the hardware store
  • 2 pack of thumb tacks (optional spray paint)
  • 1.5 yards of fabric
  • glue gun
  • staple gun + staples

My husband cut off a few inches of the MDF with our table saw to fit perfectly between the bookcases. Then it was just a matter of gluing the cork boards to the MDF using a hot glue gun!

You might have a bit of overlap,  but using an exacto-knife I cut it to match perfectly.

This is my "please stop taking pictures of me and get some pictures of the project" face. :)

We ironed the fabric to remove and wrinkles, and wrapped the board, stapling on the other side. The same way I covered these ikea stools. I think it might be helpful to also cover the board in one layer of batting, I skipped this step but I think it would have given it a bit more "oomph"!

I took some regular white thumbtacks and spray painted them gold, however, I would recommend just buying gold thumbtacks and saving yourself the trouble ;) Sometimes I take DIY a bit too far!

Jake was a rockstar at making a straight line, and apparently he has stronger thumbs than I do so he did the tacking ;)

And that was that! We used a small picture hanging kit to the back and up it went! The entire project took less than an hour and makes a huge impact on the wall.

I've been ripping out magazine pictures and fun photos of the hubs and Ax to pin up and stare at as I sit at my desk. It's like my high school bedroom come to life! :)

Thanks for coming by!

Until next time,
xo Kylie
