Caring for your wedding ring!

Happy Wednesday, friends!

And if you're reading this a HUGE congratulations! Maybe you just got engaged, or maybe you just got married. Or heck, maybe you've just remained married...and in this day and age, that deserves a pat on the back too! Go you!

Chances are, you have some piece of precious jewelry that you want to ensure lasts for years to come. I wanted to pop in to share a few things I do to make sure the investment my husband made in my wedding ring will last for years and years to come.

WEDDING RINGS

1) Get that baby INSURED!

This is my #1 most important tip. What happens if you take it off at the gym, and something tragic happens and it's nowhere to be found? What if you don't follow step #2 and a stone comes loose, and while you aren't paying attention, it comes out and you've lost it forever? You don't want to be responsible for paying to fix it. I lose things. all.the.time. So the VERY NEXT DAY after Jake proposed, we were on our way to the jeweler to pick up our appraisal, and we went straight to our insurance provider and opened up a policy. Sometimes, your jeweler will provide insurance, and sometimes you can add a "rider" policy to your renters or homeowners insurance. I found that opening a special jewelry policy was the best bet, as it was the smallest deductible. I am not an insurance pro, but I would suggest finding someone you trust and talking through the options with them. Be prepared to pay $1-$2 dollars per every $100 that your ring is worth. So for example, if your ring is worth $5000 dollars, you will be about $50 dollars a year for insurance. So.worth.it.

2) Regularly take it in to your jeweler for cleaning/tune ups

I really should make a .5 tip that is, find a really, really good jeweler. That makes everything 1000 times easier. I take my ring in maybe once a month, sometimes I forget and it's once every 2 months, and they clean it professionally, (which is AMAZEBALLS!) and check for any loose stones. It's free, takes less than 10 minutes, and it makes your ring look amazing, while giving you the piece of mind that your ring won't turn into Jason Derulo and wiggle wiggle wiggle. (That was a really bad joke, don't judge me)

3) Buy yourself a jar of this jewelry cleaner and be amazed at what it does to your ring

I need to tell you a little story. Once upon a time, on our wedding day, my engagement ring was foggy, dirty, gross, and my wedding band was shiny, perfect, and brand new. This was because in the hustle and bustle of the week, I hadn't taken the time to get my ring cleaned, and it was a hot mess on our big day. Fast forward a few weeks and Jake and I were walking through Bed Bath and Beyond spending some wedding gift cards, when he said I should try this jewelry cleaner because his mom has been using it forever, and it works really well. I said no way. No way was I going to put my most prized possession in some chemicals and let it ruin my ring. But somehow he convinced me to do it, and I don't know why I didn't before. MY RING SPARKLED LIKE IT NEVER SPARKLED BEFORE! 30 seconds in the solution and it was like it just came from the jeweler. I had to admit I was wrong and Jake was right (about my least favorite thing in the world) and I now use it once a week to keep my ring looking like new. Trust me when I say, you need this in your life. I will now gift it to every single girlfriend who get's engaged, so they don't face the dirty ring dilemma on their big day.

Above all, just love on that precious piece of metal around your finger. Regardless of stone, metal, shape, color, or price, that piece of jewelry is the most special thing you own. It's the symbol of your marriage, something your spouse no doubt spent hours picking out, and you should show it some lovin' by taking great care of it!

What would you add? Any jewelers out there or jewelry experts who can give me some new tips? I hope this was helpful!

Until Next Time,
xo Kylie

  8. Giiiirrrllll - you commented on my ring on IG (Nicnapeters) - but HOLY MOLY! LOOOOVVVEEE your ring!!! =) I love this post! I use that same cleaner (usually once a week - if I don't forget). I am obsessed with keeping my rings shiny. However, yesterday I noticed that the white gold bands are looking a little tarnished. I never noticed that before. =( And I just got my ring serviced at my jewelers last weekend. I am bummin', I am going to try my home cleaner and see if that helps. If not though - any tips on the band?? .... BTW - I am pumped to be adding a new blog to my daily reading!

    1. Um, hi, can we be best friends?! You're just about the sweetest girl ever!

So this is the weird thing about white gold, it's really just regular gold that is coated. (I think...but someone please correct me if i'm wrong)

I know with my other white gold ring I have had to get it "redipped" twice because it starts to yellow after a few years. It's usually VERY affordable and might even be free if your ring is insured! If you take it to your jeweler they should be able to recommend what to do :)

Thank you SO much for reading and coming by, gorgeous gal! You're the sweetest, i'm so glad to have you here!

  11. I don't get mine cleaned often because I just go to where we bought it, which is in the mall...however, there are closer places. It's funny that the ladies in there know me by my ring (and that there's usually paint spray all hidden in the grooves, lol)...they love it and that my hubby picked it out all by his lonesome. We NEVER went to look at rings together. I finally convinced him to get it insured about a year ago. I just said, so if I lose it you'll buy me another one? I'll bet you can guess his answer!
